Water Aid

Water Aid Officer

My name is Pauline Hoogerwerf and I have been a member of Marston Green & District Lions Club for sixteen years.

I have been President of my Club once, Secretary many times and have held many other positions in the Club. I am currently on the Community Service Committee, helping to spend the money that the Club has raised. I have held several District positions, including Cabinet Secretary.

From 1999-2001 I was the District North Sea Lions Officer, when I managed a project in Niger, West Africa, to provide ten deep wells. I visited Niger twice and, since then, have been passionate about the provision of fresh water to undeveloped countries.

I was previously the District Water Aid Officer for three years from 2005 – 2008, when I helped to raise the profile of Water Aid and encouraged Clubs to make donations.

Although I was hoping for a rest this year, I seem to be the Officer for Water Aid once again, and I fully intend to continue to promote this worthwhile and necessary cause.

Would you DRINK this?

Over a billion people never get a clean glass of water to drink.

WaterAid is an international charity dedicated to the provision of domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to some of the world’s poorest people. They work in conjunction with local organisations to set up low cost, sustainable projects that can be managed by the communities themselves.

WaterAid currently works in seventeen countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa but for several years now, all money raised by Lions in Multiple District 105 has been channelled into projects in Malawi, where approximately 43% of population have to collect water from dirty and contaminated sources. A lot of the work involves rehabilitating existing and delapidated water points. WaterAid trains members of local communities to manage, maintain and repair water and sanitation facilities themselves, thus giving them ownership and helping to ensure that the work in Malawi is sustainable.

By 2010 WaterAid hopes to help one million people gain access to clean, safe water and one million people to sanitation each year. The support of Lions Clubs will be invaluable in helping them to achieve this goal.

A simple way of contributing to WaterAid is to recycle your mobile phones. One phone can make £30, which is enough to provide two people with clean water, sanitation, hygiene education and a better quality of life. Otherwise you can make a donation to WaterAid’s valuable work in Malawi by sending your cheque to the Assistant District Treasurer in the usual way, marked on the back “WaterAid”.
