Street Children

Officer for Street Children

My name is Pauline Hoogerwerf and I have been a member of Marston Green & District Lions Club for seventeen years.

I have been President of my Club once, Secretary many times and have held many other positions in the Club. I am currently Club Secretary and on the Community Service Committee, helping to spend the money that the Club has raised. I have held several District positions, including Cabinet Secretary.

I was previously the Street Children Officer from 2005 – 2008 and 2010-2011, when I encouraged Clubs to contribute to various projects, including Edukits, Railway Children and SunShine Project, Luxor.

Consortium for Street Children/Railway Children

Worldwide, millions of children live – and die – on the streets. They have no access to education or family support and they are condemned to live by deceit, theft and prostitution.

The Consortium for Street Children consists of around 40 British NGOs supporting street children internationally, working in over 70 countries.

Their aims are:

  • to raise the profile of street children issues, politically and in the media
  • to forge closer links between members, helping them to be more effective
  • to share information and research, identifying and promoting good practice
  • to fund the core costs of the CSC and to obtain funds for joint partner projects
Consortium for street children

For several years, Lions of District 105 M have designated all money donated to Street Children to the Railway Children project, (a member of the Consortium) whose motto is “Getting to Street Children before the Streets get to them”. Railway Children work both abroad and in the UK, where there are several projects helping homeless children get the support they need.

Further information about the Consortium and Railway Children can be found on their respective websites: www.streetchildren.org.uk and www.railwaychildren.org.uk

Edukits – Changing lives through education

Children living through emergencies often lose everything – including hope. By giving them an education we can help to give them a future. Lions Clubs International became formally affiliated with UNICEF in 1994 and, since then, the relationship has grown significantly. However, they need the support of Lions Clubs to continue to fundraise for Edukits, so they can carry on providing essential educational supplies for children living in difficult circumstances.

One Edukit contains enough materials for 80 students, including chalk, school bags, pencils and exercise books, as well as maths charts, an attendance book and teacher’s guides. Each box is tailored individually for use in specific circumstances and costs only £170.

By contributing towards Edukits you can help to bring some sort of normality to children whose short lives have been devastated, either by conflict or natural disaster.
