Lion's European Musical Competition was created in 1991 when just 4 candidates were nominated for the Finals at Europa Forum in Istanbul. Since then the competition has flourished to the extent that in Rome in 2004 candidates from no less than 17 countries sought the title as Lion's European Young Musician.
MD105 entered the competition for the first time in 2004 when Alice Gledhill represented the British Isles and Ireland in Europe. Whilst not winning, Alice was a worthy representative for the MD and pioneered the way for future candidates from the Multiple District to take part.
The competition is open to young musicians up to the age of 23 and is one of the very few competitions, which provides opportunities for this age group to have access to Europe.
Each year the Europa Forum host country selects an instrument for the Competition and also a piece of music, which each candidate is required to play.
