Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF)

What is LCIF?

  • Lions Clubs International Foundation
  • Charitable funding arm of LCI
  • Lions helping Lions serve

What does LCIF do?

  • Supports efforts of Lions Clubs Worldwide in serving their local communities and the world community through humanitarian services, disaster relief and vocational assistance programmes
  • Raises funds and processes donations from Lions worldwide, corporations and others
  • Monitors projects and investments to safeguard donations
  • It is not a Primary Relief Agency

How is it governed?

  • By a board of Trustees comprising; LCI Board of Directors plus two appointees
The International President always serves as Chairman
  • Meets three times a year to review grant applications and recommendations of the 9 member executive committee
  • Reviews and approves recommendations of the Sight First advisory committee

How is it paid for?

  • It's administration expenses are paid from interest on investments
  • Donated funds are not used to pay administrative and promotional costs (approx. 8%)
  • LCIF does not receive any part of Lions dues. Indeed it has to pay it's way at Oakbrook where it is based

Is it accountable to donors?

  • Yes! This is priority No.1
Donations are safeguarded through sound investment practices using professional services and advisors
  • Donations are systematically disbursed for projects consistent with donor's wishes
  • Investments ensure LCIF's ongoing grant-making capability

How are the foundation objects achieved?

Through grant programmes to assist Lions to mobilise to meet vital worldwide needs
per:

Standard Grant - US$75k maximum. Used to fund humanitarian projects at district level. Requires matching funds raised locally. Requires minimum of 2 to 3 clubs to be considered.

Emergency Grants - Relief in wake of natural disaster. Requires request from District Governor. Plan of operation needed with request. Report required after activity.

Major Catastrophe Grant - US$1m available in a given year. Minimum of US$50k sanctioned by IP, IPIP and LCIF executive.

LCIF Humanitarian Award - Presented to a selected recipiant at International Convention. IP selects from submitted recommendations.

Major International Service Programmes Grants - serve as important part of LCIF's outreach and have been awarded for diabetic, retinopathy research, drug awareness and SightFirst (eg. MD105 Lions Eye Health Programme: US$762k)

Note: Recently "Ring Fenced" accounts have been set up for natural disasters eg. Bangladesh floods, Honduras and Nicaragua hurricanes and the Turkish earthquake.

Can I be confident that the money my club gives goes where it is intended?

YES

  • The implementation of programmes is usually done in conjunction with the Lions on the ground

eg. the Turkish earthquake funds are being administered by the Lions of Turkey, headed up by the Turkish International Director

The North Sea Lions Project (supplemented by LCIF) is to be administered by trustees who will include the President of the local Lions club

  • LCIF carry out monitoring and auditing procedures during the project with follow up visits and reports

In this way we can have confidence that the grants are wholly used for their intended purpose
